The Turkish tax number (vergi kimlik numarası) is the first piece of paper bureaucracy Turkey asks of you, and the one everything else hangs off: no bank account without it, no notarized lease, no residence-permit fee payment, no utility subscription, no property purchase. The good news is that since the tax authority rebuilt its portal, getting one takes about five minutes, online, free, with no account and no document uploads. The bad news is that most guides on the internet — including some official university pages — still point at the old portal and describe a form that no longer exists. We walked the real flow in July 2026; here is exactly what you'll see.

The tax authority (GİB) migrated its old İnteraktif Vergi Dairesi (ivd.gib.gov.tr) into the new Dijital Vergi Dairesi — dijital.gib.gov.tr — in 2024. The old address still loads a legacy shell, and the old deep links just error out, which is why so many people conclude the online route "doesn't work anymore." It works fine — at the new address.
On dijital.gib.gov.tr's homepage, scroll past the payment shortcuts: there is a large banner in English, "Potential Tax Identification Number Application." Click it. You land on a bilingual form titled Yabancılar İçin Potansiyel Vergi Kimlik Numarası Başvurusu — every field labeled in Turkish and English. No login button, no e-Devlet requirement.

Tick the accuracy-confirmation box, press BAŞVUR (Apply), and your 10-digit potential tax number appears on screen — many report a downloadable PDF letter too. Screenshot it, save the PDF, and email it to yourself. That's it. There is no waiting period: the number is in the tax registry the moment it's issued, and banks use it the same day (branch moods vary — the PDF printout usually settles it).
One notable simplification: the old form demanded a passport photo-page upload (1 MB limit that rejected most phone photos). The current form has no upload at all — one less thing to fight with.
When the form rejects you: the İ/i trap
The classic failure is an error saying your identity/passport information could not be verified. Nine times out of ten, per years of expat reports, it's the Turkish alphabet: Turkish has a dotted İ/i and a dotless I/ı as different letters, and a name typed with the wrong one won't match. The circulating fixes: retype names in plain lowercase, avoid autocomplete, and if you're on a Turkish keyboard make sure you're not typing ı where you mean i. Double-check dates are day-first. Then refresh the captcha and retry — resubmitting with corrected spelling resolves most cases.

The in-person fallback (and who actually needs it)
Any tax office (vergi dairesi) issues the number at the sicil (registration) desk: original passport + a photocopy of the ID page, sometimes a one-line request petition they hand you, 15–30 minutes, free. Istanbul's tax offices have a documented policy of turning away walk-ins for things the website can do — they mainly serve people whose online application failed verification. After you have it
- Use it immediately for the things that blocked you: opening a bank account, notarizing your lease (see the renting guide), utilities, permit fees.
- Lost it? No panic and no second application: dijital.gib.gov.tr → Doğrulamalar (Verifications) → Yabancılar İçin Potansiyel Vergi Kimlik Numarası Sorgulama re-finds your number from passport details, no login needed.
- It's temporary by design. When your residence permit is issued you receive an 11-digit foreigner ID starting with 99 (yabancı kimlik numarası) — by regulation, that YKN becomes your tax ID for everything from then on. The linkage happens in the registry, but old records don't always update themselves: tell your bank to switch your file to the YKN when you get it.
- Never pay for this. Relocation agencies and visa-lookalike websites sell "tax number assistance" that duplicates a free public form. There is no official fee, online or at the office.
